The PARCS Fit for Life program is a university and community health and wellness partnership that fills a health education and physical activity participation gap that fitness centers and schools cannot currently provide due to limits in physical resources and time. Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.The program provides supervised group and individual exercise programs in safe exercise facilities located in three Indianapolis Public School high schools. The program has also worked with Indianapolis Housing Agency public housing communities to lead exercise activities and provide physical activity counseling in order to increase physical activity and exercise participation throughout the Indianapolis inner city community. Staffed by IUPUI Exercise Science, Physical Education, Nursing, and Sociology undergraduate majors, over 1000 members from the Indianapolis inner city communities have participated in PARCS Fit for Life. In exchange for these services, university students receive invaluable real-world counseling and training experiences with a variety of people who are healthy or have chronic and/or hypokinetic conditions. Clik here to view.Faculty members receive teaching and research opportunities that cannot be duplicated in classrooms, clinics, and laboratories. AFI recognizes PARCS Fit for Life is a best practices model partnership and ACSM has partnered with PARCS Fit for Life. The partners are seeking other partners who are interested in duplicating the PARCS Fit for Life model with university faculty and students, public schools, and community agencies.
